The ancient Indian way of Yoga is an integral system to maintain strong mental and physical ability and increase spiritual awareness. Swami Vishnu-Divananda (a disciple of Swami Sivananda) synthesised the wisdom of Yoga in five basic principles;
1) Proper Exercise
2) Proper Breathing
3) Proper Relaxation
4) Proper Diet
5) Positive Thinking and Meditation
Within the Sivananda yoga class, 4 of the above will be covered, therefore only leaving the diet for consideration. The benefits of yoga that people often find is that it; relieves stress and tension, improves digestion and circulation, alleviates depression, and aids sleep and relaxation. It may also increase energy and vitality, increase strength, flexibility and balance, and be powerful and uplifting.
